Reviews of 2000 Leoville-Barton Bordeaux Blend

96 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
April 2003
Absolutely spectacular from bottle, but frightfully closed and backward, with massive power and structure, the saturated purple-colored 2000 Leoville Barton is one of the greatest wines ever made at this estate. The wine has smoky, earthy notes intermixed with graphite, camphor, damp earth, jammy cassis, cedar, and a hint of mushroom. Enormous, even monstrous in the mouth, with tremendous extraction, broodingly backward, dense flavors, and copious tannins, this should prove to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage and one of the most compelling Leoville Bartons ever made...

However, anyone unable to defer gratification for at least a decade should steer clear of this behemoth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040.

...Knockout superripe nose combines black cherry, licorice and exotic spices. Compellingly sweet, lush and complete, with harmonious acids giving the wine lovely vinosity and extending the flavors. Finishes with lush, dusty tannins and superb persistence...

...this was going to be one of the stars of the vintage. And a star it remains. There is big, ripe fruit, with solid, ageworthy tannins. It may not be as powerful as some of the blockbusters of the vintage, but it is certainly more opulent, less classical than Léoville-Barton can sometimes be...

Amazingly rich and silky. Lots of chocolate and blackberry aromas with hints of raspberries. Full-bodied, with silky, round tannins. Great concentration. Long, long finish. This is the biggest, most powerful ever from Léoville Barton...

This is the type of wine that makes your palate change! This is hands down one of the most profound red wines I have ever tasted. The key word is ballance. It was a tanic monster with enough fruit & acid to last many, many years. I am very glad that I did open one of my bottles early...now the waiting games begins.....and I can't wait!

About 2000 Leoville-Barton Bordeaux Blend

About the Winery Leoville-Barton
"Chateau Leoville Barton is the third (and smallest) piece of the famous trio of Saint Julien properties that 200 years ago formed one estate (Chateau Leoville) belonging to Alexandre de Gasq. It has been the property of the illustrious Barton family since 1836. Leoville Barton has no actual house or winery, so the wine is made and bottled at the Barton's neighboring property, Chateau Langoa-Barton...Leoville Barton lies between the towns of Beychevelle and Saint Julien, the estate's few buildings sit directly on the vineyard road, and the vineyards lie just to its west...Vineyard is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 0% Cabernet Franc. This planting mix has evolved over the years since Anthony Barton took over the management of the Leoville Barton. The percentage of Merlot has increased from about 15% in the 1970s and Cabernet Franc has disappeared.

About the Wine
"One of the most loved clarets of all and one that goes from strength to strength. Balance is the key feature of this with along with wonderful refinement and length. A very fine 1999 and one that will age gracefully as well...For laying down, Red, Full Bodied, Dry, 12.5% alcohol..."
