Reviews of 2000 Monbousquet Bordeaux Blend
95 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate April 2000 ...bottled unfined and unfiltered, it exemplifies proprietor Perse's enormous efforts. Black and blue to the rim, this wine represents the essence of this terroir. Its saturated black/purple color is accompanied by extraordinary aromatics of sweet blackberries, chocolate, coffee, incense, new saddle leather, and vanilla. Remarkable intensity, lively acidity, and abundant tannin provide definition and grip. This is the most intense, muscular, and "biggest" Monbousquet made to date...
92 points, Stephen Tanzer May 2003 ...Roasted currant and black cherry scents complicated by sexy oak. At once chewy and silky in the mouth, with complex, fresh flavors of plum, redcurrant, vanilla, coffee, smoky oak and woodsy underbrush. Finishes sweet and long...
89 points, Wine Spectator July 2003 Big and juicy, with a slightly barnyard character. This shows loads of fruit, with dark chocolate and berry. Meaty, rustic finish. Slightly too rustic to be outstanding. Best after 2006. 6,665 cases made. –JS

Anthony A. May 2008 2000 Monbousquet....another St. Emillion wine that just got better and better as the night went on. I have been disappointed with some vintages of this wine in the past but this is one of the best Monbousquet's. Has balance between the fruit, acid and tannins. Notes of dark fruit and saddle leather along with coffee and chocolate on the nose. Very sweet and silky mouthfeel with both black and red fruit and a long & sweet finish. Though still young this wine has decades ahead of it and will only get better. Great St. Emillion wines rock!!!!!!!

Rick M. April 2008 Is it possible to know the texture of silk within the liquid state of one of Bordeaux's finest? This wine, a St. Emilion Grand Cru will indulge you with one of the finer things in life. A smooth gem that begs you to come closer works as a complement to a hearty steak or simply on its own as it teases you with its seductive qualities. Certainly, you can spend all the money for a First Growth, but why, when a fraction of the price brings you equal joy and harmony. Definitely enjoy now but it will hang on way past most of us. |
About 2000 Monbousquet Bordeaux Blend
About the Winery Monbousquet
"Château Monbousquet is located in the commune of St- Sulplice de Faleyrens in the south-east part of the St-Emilion appellation. For years Monbousquet was a notorious underachiever, whose wines were soft, dilute and generally uninspiring.
The catalyst for change came when the property was bought by Parisian supermarket tycoon Gérard Perse in 1993. Gérard, who now owns Château Pavie and Château Pavie-Decesse, severely restricted the yields, constructed a state of the art cuvier and hired the ubiquitous Michel Rolland as a consultant. Monbousquet's wines are now amongst the finest in St-Emilion. Monbousquet is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks and the wine is then aged in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months. Monbousquet is bottled unfined and unfiltered."
About the Wine
"7500-case blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon...amazingly concentrated effort for the vintage...Medium ruby. Exotically ripe aromas of black raspberry, roasted meat and nutty oak. Sweet, thick and consistent, with lovely sugar/acid balance. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and terrific freshness and subtle persistence. This has real complexity."
