2000 Pavie-Decesse Bordeaux Blend
Reviews of 2000 Pavie-Decesse Bordeaux Blend
96 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 2003 In 2002, a big section of this vineyard will be incorporated into Pavie. The 2000 Pavie Decesse, made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc at yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, enjoyed a five-week maceration and was aged in 100% new oak, with aging on its lees for the first six months. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered, as are all the Perse wines. This wine, for about one-half the price of Pavie, is well-worth checking out ... to state it mildly! A brilliant effort, the wine has an opaque bluish/purple color and a gorgeous nose of sweet blueberries, blackberries, charcoal, and mineral. The wine is full-bodied, rich, with striking purity, fabulous delineation, immense body and extract, and sweet but high levels of tannin in the finish, which goes on for nearly one minute. This is undoubtedly the greatest Pavie Decesse ever produced and a modern-day Bordeaux legend. At one-half the price of its sibling, Pavie, it should be obvious what readers should do! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.
93 points, Stephen Tanzer May 2003 Bright, deep ruby. Explosive aroma of roasted black cherry. Dense, highly concentrated and deep, with penetrating, palate-saturating flavors of blackberry and black cherry framed by firm underlying minerality. A wine of great force; despite its major ripeness, there's also a cool, medicinal aspect that's utterly refreshing. Finishes with big, broad tannins and outstanding length.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast June 2003 While Pavie itself goes for super-opulence, Pavie-Decesse is more restrained, more classic. It has harmony and balance, allowing the deep, black fruits to rest easily with the dense tannins. This is a wine which will age well, gracefully over 10 years and more.
94 points, Wine Spectator July 2003 Extremely ripe, almost raisiny, with lots of Indian spices and prunes that turn to tar. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins that emphasize the richness of the year and the class of the soil. Best after 2009. 2,080 cases made. –JS

About the Winery Pavie-Decesse
"Château Pavie Decesse, a St.Emilion Grand Cru Classé property is now producing wines the equal of its illustrious brother Chateau Pavie. Both properties were previously owned by the Valet family until they were purchased by Gérard Perse, owner of Château Monbousquet, in 1997.
Pavie-Decesse is situated in the heart of the Côtes sub-district of St. Emilion, with the vineyards being planted on chalky, clay soils."
About the Wine
"Pavie Decesse is vinified traditionally before being matured in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months. The wines are deep in colour and concentrated and intense on the palate, with noticeable tannins and hints of vanilla...There are 9 hectares planted with Merlot (60%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%)."
