Connoisseurs' Guide, Connoisseur's Guide, April 2004

A somewhat more open style is being offered by Rubicon these days, and, in this not always hospitable vintage, that direction has paid dividends. Because, while this wine does, indeed, want cellaring, it will require less than earlier Rubicons, and the result is a wine whose solid, fairly concentrated...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2003

Outstanding (no small accomplishment in this vintage), the deep ruby/purple-colored, medium to full-bodied 2000 Rubicon possesses more new oak than the 1999, along with impressive richness, and notes of cedar, smoke, black currants, and meaty/forest floor characteristics...

There are 3,000 cases of this serious red. Production rose to 4,500 cases for the 2000 Rubicon. Like most vintages, it is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (in excess of 90%). Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by sumptuous aromas of smoky black currants, creosote, white flowers, herbs, and tobacco. This medium-bodied, big, muscular, sweet, expansive red should be attractive when released in two years. It is a strong effort for the vintage and may eclipse the 1999 because of the sweetness of the tannin and more expansive texture. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025.

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, June 2003

(to have been bottled in mid-March) Saturated ruby. Pungent aromas of black cherry, coffee, bitter chocolate and violet. Dense, sweet and deep; this has broad, palate-coating fruit with the strength to support the big, cheek-coating tannins. Quite long on the aftertaste, and not overly oaky. 89-91 points

Showcases the shortcomings of the vintage as well as the strengths of its terroir and winemaking. The blackberry and cassis flavors are obviously short, and snap to an abrupt finish, but the textural complexity and oaky overlay are very fine. A charming wine meant for early drinking.

Beautifully crafted, rich, vibrant and deftly balanced. Wonderful currant, blackberry, anise, sage, mineral and fresh earth offer layers of complexity and concentration. Finishes with just the right amount of tannins to give it a solid backbone.
