The 2001 Chardonnay Mount Carmel Vineyard (2,304 bottles) exhibits more color than its siblings in addition to tart, high acidity, which makes it difficult to evaluate. As the wine sits in the glass, notions of tangerines, lemon zest, and other citrus emerge. With medium body and a tight, tart style, it is reminiscent of a top-notch Chablis. This was the most perplexing and difficult offering to evaluate, but it is much too young to drink. Give it another year of bottle age, and see what happens. Tel. (805) 452-5609

A rich and creamy style, with a tight, concentrated core of fig, pear, apricot and a touch of butterscotch and anise. Finishes with a long, flinty, minerally aftertaste. Drink now through 2007. 120 cases made. –JL
