June 2004
This estates debut vintage, 1998, was overly oaked, but subsequent vintages have gotten better, and this is the finest yet produced at this 9-acre vineyard (planted with 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc). The omnipresent Stephane Derenoncourt is the winemaking consultant. The opaque purple-colored 2001 offers up a sweet perfume of espresso roast, kirsch liqueur, black currants, licorice, and spice box. Toasty oak makes an appearance on the palate, along with a wealth of fruit, concentration, and extract. This impressively-endowed Bordeaux should take on even more character as it ages. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and consume it over the following 12-15.

April 2002
The 2001 (produced from yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare) is a rich, top-notch garage wine with plenty of opulence, jammy ripe fruit, spicy new oak, and plenty of appeal. It should drink well for 10-15 years. The first vintage for this 7.5-acre vineyard was 1998, an over-oaked, under-wined effort. That was followed by a so-so offering in 1999, but a strong performance in 2000. Now that consultant Stephane Derenoncourt has been brought in, this 70% Merlot/30% Cabernet Franc garage wine has begun to impress. This proprietor's other St.-Emilion estate is Chateau Bienfaisance.
