In what is an abundant vintage for Togni, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon looks to be a superlative effort. It boasts a saturated black/purple color as well as a strikingly pure nose of creme de cassis, tapenade, licorice, white flowers, and subtle roasted wood notions. The wine is dense, velvety-textured, and opulent, with sensational concentration, and the vintage's outstanding seamlessness. This classic Cabernet is best purchased only by those with patience and cold cellars. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is the finest Cabernet Togni has produced since the mid-nineties. In bottle, it is even better than it was from barrel. Even better, there are 2,100 cases, a humongous quantity by this property’s measly production standards. The color is an inky/black, and the nose offers up spectacular aromas of melted licorice intermixed with creme de cassis, acacia flowers, roasted meats, tapenade, and subtle pain grille. Opulent and voluptuous, with huge body brilliantly balanced by sweet tannin and adequate acidity, this Cabernet possesses impeccable equilibrium, admirable purity, and a 50-second finish. It is one of Togni’s great Cabernet Sauvignons, of which there have been many over the last quarter of a century. While masochists might enjoy it young, I would opt for cellaring it 4-5 years, and drink it over the following two decades. It is a brilliant achievement!

Fresh earth, cedar, herb and currant flavors form a complex aroma. Intense and concentrated on the palate, with a slight rustic edge and ample tannins. Shows all the raw ingredients for excellence, yet it's a bit rough and tumble right now. Better than previously reviewed. Best from 2007 through 2014. 2,100 cases made. (JL)
