95 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2004

The so-called pick of the best barrels (a difficult job at this winery), the 2001 Syrah Seymour’s Vineyard (named after John’s father) possesses additional concentration, aromatics, and length. A blue/purple color is followed by meaty flavors that coat the palate with blackberries, mocha, cocoa, earth, and creme de cassis. A tour de force in winemaking, it is a spectacular, rich, broad yet remarkably well-balanced wine to drink over the next 10-15 years. Awesome stuff!

An expression of Syrah grown in chalky/limestone soils, the 2001 Syrah Seymour’s Vineyard exhibits notes of figs, plums, blackberries, currants, and raisins in a full-bodied, powerful style with good delineation, minerality, and earth characteristics. This large-sized Syrah requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 15-16.

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, January 2005

...Aromas of blackberry, gunflint and black licorice. Thick, creamy and supersweet, with dark berry and mineral flavors complicated by peppery and saline nuances. Wears its high alcohol as gracefully as a top Chateauneuf du Pape. Finishes with sweet, lush tannins and outstanding length...

95 points,

Wine Spectator, February 2004

Dark, rich and concentrated, with a heady mix of beef, leather, spice, licorice and wild berry flavors that turn exotic and supple, finishing with a long, persistent aftertaste that keeps revealing extra flavor facets. Drink now through 2012. 275 cases made. (JL)
