The so-called pick of the best barrels (a difficult job at this winery), the 2001 Syrah Seymours Vineyard (named after Johns father) possesses additional concentration, aromatics, and length. A blue/purple color is followed by meaty flavors that coat the palate with blackberries, mocha, cocoa, earth, and creme de cassis. A tour de force in winemaking, it is a spectacular, rich, broad yet remarkably well-balanced wine to drink over the next 10-15 years. Awesome stuff!

An expression of Syrah grown in chalky/limestone soils, the 2001 Syrah Seymours Vineyard exhibits notes of figs, plums, blackberries, currants, and raisins in a full-bodied, powerful style with good delineation, minerality, and earth characteristics. This large-sized Syrah requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 15-16.

...Aromas of blackberry, gunflint and black licorice. Thick, creamy and supersweet, with dark berry and mineral flavors complicated by peppery and saline nuances. Wears its high alcohol as gracefully as a top Chateauneuf du Pape. Finishes with sweet, lush tannins and outstanding length...

Dark, rich and concentrated, with a heady mix of beef, leather, spice, licorice and wild berry flavors that turn exotic and supple, finishing with a long, persistent aftertaste that keeps revealing extra flavor facets. Drink now through 2012. 275 cases made. (JL)
