Prodigious is the 2001 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (410 cases from a vineyard planted in 1927, formerly known as De Loach’s Pelletti Ranch). Extremely concentrated and full-bodied, it is one of the most magnificent Zinfandels I have tasted over the last several years. Yields were only 1.25 tons of fruit per acre, and the wine was aged in French oak for 15 months prior to bottling. Dense, chewy, and layered, my experience suggests that even such compelling Zinfandels are best drunk during their first 4-5 years of life, although some remain intact until age 7-8. Kudos to Mike Officer.

Weaves together ripe blackberry and wild berry fruit with a mix of herbs and spices. Teetering on jammy, it holds back, finishing with firm acidity and tannins and excellent length, with a flash of smoke and toast. Drink now through 2008. 219 cases made. (JL)

About the Winery Carlisle Winery
The owner and winemaker of Carlisle Winery and Vineyards tasted his
first late-harvest Riesling at age 19 that he claims was so good that
it changed the course of his life. He read everything he could find on
the subject of wine, became an avid collector, and actually began to
teach his own courses on wine appreciation. He had originally decided
to pursue a career in software development, but after 5 years he was
restless and started to pursue his true passion: wine and winemaking.
He launched the Carlisle label in 1998 and his production reached 1000
cases in 2000. Jay Maddox, a good friend with a degree in viticulture
and enology from UC Davis, joined his team and brought a wealth of
knowledge and ability that helped Carlisle grow to 4000 cases annual
production. Officer and Maddox have turned Carlisle into a
critically-acclaimed label and have received numerous ratings and
awards.
