2001 Clerc Milon Bordeaux Blend
Reviews of 2001 Clerc Milon Bordeaux Blend
90-93 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate April 2003 The 2001 Clerc Milon is undeniably a sleeper of the vintage, and an effort that may actually turn out better than the brilliant 2000. The blend has changed since I tasted it last year and is now 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. A roasted espresso character in the nose, along with melted chocolate, licorice, creme de cassis, and new oak jumps from the glass of this impressive, sweet, expansive, full-bodied Clerc Milon. This is impressive stuff, pure, dense chewy, and sexy. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.
88-90 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate April 2002 The 2001 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest primarily Merlot with some Cabernet Franc. It exhibits notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, licorice, and fudge. It is concentrated for a 2001, with moderately high tannin, and impressive intensity as well as grip. While it is easy to be underwhelmed by this offering, given how spectacular the 2000 is, the 2001 is another strong effort from Clerc Milon. This medium-bodied Pauillac will be at its finest between 2007-2016.
88-90 points, Stephen Tanzer June 2003 ($28-$30) Medium ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, minerals, violet and licorice. Typically backward and reserved for this wine at this stage, with a somewhat medicinal austerity. This was sweeter than the Armailhac a year ago but not today. Longer on the finish, though, with a very solid tannic structure. 88-90 points
90 points, Stephen Tanzer June 2004 ($34-$40) Ruby-red. Ripe aromas of licorice, bitter chocolate, roasted herbs, tar and exotic spices. Supple, round and pliant, with redcurrant, licorice and herbal flavors. Finishes with surprisingly sweet tannins nicely buffered by the wine's fat. A very good showing for this wine. 90 points
91 points, Wine Spectator March 2004 Sleek and racy, with a beautiful structure of very fine tannins and ripe fruit. There are minerals, currants and berries throughout, yet it's subtle and caressing. Lovely wine. I like this as much as the 2000. Best after 2007. (JS)

About 2001 Clerc Milon Bordeaux Blend
About the Winery Clerc Milon
"Chateau Clerc-Milon is located in Pauillac, just between Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...69 acres producing 14,000 cases... 5th Growth..65% Cabernet Sauvignon , 25% Merlot, 10% other varieties... These wines receive the same treatment as their more famous neighbor and Rothschild stablemate, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...This chateau was named a fifth growth in the Medoc Classification of 1855 but always seemed to be an underachiever considering its prime location between two first growths (Mouton and Lafite). It had prime location and soil but never realized the expectations that were placed upon it. The estate is marked by the half-finished chateau which sits on the property.
In 1970, the Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased the property and began a complete renovation of the vineyards and the cellars. New fermentation vats were added to lenghten the maceration time. The chateau started to show what it could become with the fabulous 1982 vintage and really came into it's own in about 1985...The wines of Clerc Milon are firm and well structured due to the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon used to make them. They have hints of raspberry and black currant in the nose and on the palate. These wines are able to easily age for a decade or longer but are suprisingly accessible at much younger ages. They are often approachable when 6 or 7 years old... "
About the Wine
"Chateau Clerc-Milon is an unusual wine. It does not have a huge, vocal following in the way that Lynch-Bages does. It does not have the benefit of recent publicity concerning an obvious improvement in quality ...an impressive wine; in several vintages a dark, brooding and masculine libation, punching way above its weight...
