Pierre Damoy sold off to negociants wine from the youngest vines in his large (5.36 hectare – 13.25 acre) parcel of Chambertin Clos de Beze, keeping 19 barrels of old vine (planted in the 1920s) wine as the estate’s own production in 2001. This Vieilles Vignes cuvee has a superb nose of spice-laced black cherries. Fresh, broad, and ample, it reveals loads of toasty, smoky new oak, blackberries, and cherries. A couple of barrels of this wine were tasted, with one displaying a lush satin texture, and the other a firmer personality with woody tannin. The score took both samples into consideration. Projected maturity: now-2009.
