An elegant, stylish, finesse-styled 2001, this 100% Merlot was produced from small yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare, and bottled unfined as well as unfiltered. A dark ruby/purple color accompanies a restrained, but solid bouquet of blueberries, raspberries, and smoky oak. Medium-bodied, understated, and substantially flavored, it possesses a nicely textured mid-palate and finish. Interestingly, I did not see as much difference between this cuvee and its sibling, La Croix de Gay, as in other vintages. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

This estate has followed their sensational 2000 with a 2001 that is almost as spectacular. The 7.5 acre, 100% Merlot vineyard situated in the heart of the Pomerol plateau was cropped at 25 hectoliters per hectare. Malolactic took place in barrel, and the wine will be bottled without fining or filtration. An opaque purple color and sweet perfume of licorice, blueberries, and creme de cassis along with hints of violets and truffles are followed by a pure, deep, medium to full-bodied Pomerol revealing excellent freshness as well as definition. It is an impeccably made, classy, potentially long-lived effort. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2017.

Croix de Gay is a small 10 hectare estate in Pomerol that boasts tits vieielles vignes
reputation with its ancient merlot vines. The proprietor, Alain
Raynaud, is best known for his involved in the Lascombes turn-around in
2001 where he reconstructed the Lascombes label and began to produce
very sucessful Lascombes wines in a matter of a few vintages.
