The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Hyde Vineyard may be the finest Cabernet I have ever tasted from Carneros (better known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah). Sadly, there are less than 500 cases of this sensational offering. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in Taransaud barrels, this full-bodied, thick, rich 2001 offers up aromas of licorice, pepper, black currants, and loamy soil. Pure, multi-layered, supple, and rich, it is best drunk between 2004-2018.

Deep medium ruby. Perfumed aromas of currant, graphite, licorice, tobacco, smoke and truffle, with a subtle whiff of currant leaf. Sweet, lush, dense and chocolatey, with hints of game and truffle and solid underlying structure. Intensely flavored cabernet, rather atypically Bordeaux-like for a wine from this producer. Finishes with tongue-dusting tannins.

Deliciously smooth, rich and polished, with a complex array of currant, blackberry, melted chocolate and mocha flavors, offering a wealth of concentrated flavors and a long, intense, yet graceful and harmonious finish that lingers, echoing coffee and smoky oak. Drink now through 2012. 481 cases made. (JL)
