The blockbuster 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (a 650-case blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec) tips the scales at a lofty 15.1% alcohol, but it is neither hot nor heavy. An inky/blue/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of espresso roast, melted licorice, fudge, creme de cassis, and blackberries. This low acid, full-bodied 2001 possesses tremendous intensity, a massive palate impression, and no trace of heaviness or heat from its high octane style. The tannin is sweet, but clearly noticeable. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following two decades. This is a thrilling offering from true garagists!

Superripe aromas of black raspberry, roasted cassis, licorice, pipe tobacco and smoked meat. Dense, rich and sweet, with flamboyant flavors of cassis, licorice, leather, game and black tea. As extracted and high in alcohol (15.1%) as this is, its lovely ripe acidity somehow keeps it fresh and gives it shape. Finishes very long and sweet, with suave, melting tannins. Very impressive California cabernet, and a wonderful example of the vintage.

Dark, rich and intense, with dusty berry, chocolate, cedar and currant flavors that spread out on the palate, offering complexity and concentration, supported by firm, ripe tannins and finishing with a persistent aftertaste...
