My favorite is the blockbuster 2001 Syrah Melville Vineyard, which offers up gorgeously compelling creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, spice box, mineral, and acacia flower aromas as well as flavors. It is dense, pure, and multilayered, with an opulence that provides immediate accessibility. However, there is no doubting that it will stand up to 10-14 years of cellaring. One of the most riveting of the 2001 Syrahs is the inky blue/black/purple-colored 2001 Syrah Melville Vineyard, from a cool climate vineyard considered by many of the locals to be one of the finest sites of the region. The 2001 exhibits aromas of acacia flowers intermixed with melted licorice, blackberry liqueur, and subtle oak. Spectacularly rich, with fabulous intensity, a multilayered mid-palate, and a formidable finish with moderately high tannin, it requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should last for 15-16. Impressive juice!
