Moderately reserved cassis, plum and coffee aromas cut with a distinct menthol note merge into powerful, full-bodied flavors of terrific size and intensity. The strikingly long, chocolaty finish goes on and on. This is quite particular in style and it's a bit too ripe for me but this is undeniably impressive.

An exceptional wine, the 2002 Clos Vougeot (harvested at 14.2% natural potential alcohol) explodes from the glass with aromas of coffee-laced black cherries, spices, and blackberries. Medium to full-bodied, ample, and expansive, it coats the taster's palate with innumerable silky layers of perfume, flowers, cherries, raspberries, and underlying notes of rocks and earth. Harmonious yet powerful, it is fresh, admirably balanced, extremely ripe, and highly expressive. Drink it between 2007 and 2018. -Pierre Rovani

Bright, deep red. Musky aromas of black cherry and licorice. Sweet, chewy and lush; a big wine but conveys an impression of lower acidity than most of Mortet's examples from Gevrey-Chambertin. This is completely different in shape from most of the foregoing samples. Finishes broad and tannic. From a hot spot in this vast grand cru: the vines on rocky but deep soil are located just below the Chateau de la Tour and are protected from north winds by the village of Vougeot. 91+
