This wine is opaque and dark red/purple color with full intensity. The nose lifts with a perfume of ripe cherry compote and warm integrated oak and vanillin. A tertiary nose of underlying gravel, rocks and dusty tarry earth and graphite supports the perfume. On the palate, a delicious ripe cherry and plum fruit shows a medium acid and medium to full bodied wine. The striking point to notice here is the fleshy powdery dusty tannins that coat your mouth nicely and finish smooth, but with the right amount of focus to balance the fruit and oak. This wine has power and concentration with a very long, lingering finish!

A surprisingly strong offering, this blend of 75% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Malbec exhibits raspberry, blueberry, floral, and mineral-like aromas along with subtle notes of toasty oak, medium body, and an elegant personality. Not a wine of power or huge extraction, it will offer finesse, purity, and elegance over the next 10-15 years.

A blend of 75% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc (from vines planted before 1942), 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Malbec, this is a wine of extraordinary elegance, precision, and pure, concentrated fruit. From an ancient vineyard that escaped the devastating frosts of 1956, 1961, 1985, and 1991, it sees a cold maceration as well as fanatical attention to detail both in the vineyard and the winery. The complex aromas include the entire blueberry/blackberry fruit spectrum as well as scents of violets (or is it acacia flowers?). One of the most complete 2002 St.-Emilions, it is a beautifully textured, extremely pure, medium-bodied, elegant effort handsomely wrapped in subtle toasty oak. This beauty does not have the power of the 2000, or the flesh and fat of the 1998, but it should hit its peak in 2-3 years, and last for 14-16.

Ruby-red. Red plum, smoke, iron and tobacco on the nose. Sweet, lush and expressive, with a note of tobacco. Finishes with dusty tannins. An elegantly styled wine that will likely evolve more quickly than the 2004. 89 points

Aromas of blackberries with hints of new oak and tobacco. Pretty plum character underneath. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a medium finish. Nicely done for the vintage. Best after 2006. 4,580 cases made. (JS)
