90 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate April 2005 A sleeper of the vintage...Its deep plum/ruby color is accompanied by notes of sweet berry fruit, underbrush, smoky new oak, and chocolate. This big, exotic, flamboyant effort is atypical for a 2002...
89-92 points, Stephen Tanzer June 2003 (100% merlot, from a property purchased in early 2002 by Yves Vatelot, owner of Reignac; went through alcoholic fermentation in new barriques Saturated ruby. Floral and medicinal notes, along with a hint of biscuit. Fat, sweet and dense; more powerful but more clenched today than Vatelot's Reignac, without that wine's pliancy of texture. Note of dark chocolate. The vinification in new barriques takes place at a lower temperature, preserving freshness of fruit and, in theory at least, mitigating the influence of the new oak. Very strong for the vintage, but is it better than the Reignac? 89-92 points
89 points, Stephen Tanzer June 2005 Medium ruby. Sexy aromas of black raspberry and mocha. Fat, sweet flavors of black fruits lead to substantial but ripe tannins. This is delicious already. 89 points

About the Winery Balthus
In 2002 Chateau de Reignac purchased a neighboring estate which is where Balthus is produced from a special, three-hectare, portion of the vineyard that was planted some 35 years ago excusively with Merlot. This high-quality terroir consists of clay and limestone. Balthus is barrel-fermented using a system developed and patented by Yves Vatelot. In view of the spectacular quality obtained using this process, it was implemented for the wine of Reignac beginning with the 2003 vintage.
