Reviews of 2002 Carlisle Winery Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard Zinfandel
94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate February 2005 As for the 2002s, this was a top vintage for Carlisle. The general practice of picking ripe fruit from primarily ancient vineyards and completely destemming resulted in outstanding offerings. The 2002 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (a 638-case blend of 84% Zinfandel and 16% Alicante Bouchet, Petite Sirah, Grand Noir, and Carignan) was harvested in late October. After indigenous fermentations in small open-top fermenters, the wine was moved to French oak (one-third new). Bottled unfined and unfiltered (as are all the Carlisle wines), it offers up a sensational perfume of raspberries, blackberries, pepper, flowers, and lead pencil shavings. This is a great Zinfandel from a vineyard formerly owned by De Loach (then called Peletti Ranch). Run, dont walk, and snatch up as many bottles of this beauty as you can.
92-94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate December 2003 A blend of 85% Zinfandel and the rest a mixed field blend (Alicante, Carignan, Petite Sirah, and who knows what else), the 2002 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color, and a big nose of graphite intermixed with blackberries, crushed rocks, pepper, and notions of blue fruits. Full-bodied, well-textured, rich, and concentrated with power to spare, this is a hedonistically satisfying yet intellectually compelling red to drink over the next 7-8 years.
About 2002 Carlisle Winery Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard Zinfandel
About the Winery Carlisle Winery
The owner and winemaker of Carlisle Winery and Vineyards tasted his
first late-harvest Riesling at age 19 that he claims was so good that
it changed the course of his life. He read everything he could find on
the subject of wine, became an avid collector, and actually began to
teach his own courses on wine appreciation. He had originally decided
to pursue a career in software development, but after 5 years he was
restless and started to pursue his true passion: wine and winemaking.
He launched the Carlisle label in 1998 and his production reached 1000
cases in 2000. Jay Maddox, a good friend with a degree in viticulture
and enology from UC Davis, joined his team and brought a wealth of
knowledge and ability that helped Carlisle grow to 4000 cases annual
production. Officer and Maddox have turned Carlisle into a
critically-acclaimed label and have received numerous ratings and
awards.
