Spices, minerals, ginger, and pears can be discerned in the aromatics of the 2002 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche. Harvested at 14.1% natural potential alcohol, it is a deep, medium-bodied, sappy wine with an admirably long finish. This is consistently the wine Maison Drouhin gives the longest elevage to, something the 2002 will benefit from, as it needs to flesh out its somewhat tight mid-palate. Projected maturity: 2006-2015.

Reticent nose suggests pear, tropical fruits and smoky oak. Bigger and broader than Drouhin's regular Chassagne villages, with notes of smoke, iodine and stone. Fat and full, but firm acids and solid minerality give this very young and rather unforthcoming wine good grip. 90(+?) points

Intense. Concentrated, almost oily in texture and evoking stone notes and a strong sense of place, this wine just keeps unfolding its complex flavors across the palate. With terrific harmony and balance, along with a vibrant structure and finesse, this is about as good as Chardonnay gets. Endless finish. Best from 2007 through 2025. 120 cases imported. –BS
