Reviews of 2002 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
December 2005
The elegance, purity, complexity, and striking beauty of the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is something to behold. This is a prodigious example of marrying the power and richness of Napa Cabernet with a sense of restraint, elegance, but tremendous, authoritative flavor intensity. As I said last year, if Chateau Margaux were making wine in Napa, this might be what it would taste like. An extraordinary nose of black currants, chocolate, sweet licorice, and a hint of toast jumps from the glass of this wine, which exhibits superb ripeness, an incredibly well-delineated, full-bodied, opulent palate, and good, uplifting acidity and freshness. This is a stunning tour de force in winemaking and ranks as the finest Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted. It should drink well for 15-20 years.

Spottswoode has been on a roll lately with the Cabernet program, but I can’t think of a greater vintage than their 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. This dense ruby/purple-colored 2002 boasts an extravagant nose of licorice, creme de cassis, and truffles. As it sits in the glass, notions of white chocolate and mocha also emerge. In the mouth, it is like a New World version of Chateau Margaux’s 2000 or 1990. Wonderfully rich and opulent, but structured and delineated, with exceptionally sweet fruit, laser-like precision, and purity, this is a tour de force in winemaking. One of the greatest reds Spottswoode has produced during its distinguished history, it is a full-bodied classic of extraordinary proportions. The wine’s low acidity and ripe tannin suggest early drinkability, but it is still a youthful effort that should evolve easily for 15-20 years. Don’t miss it!

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate’s preliminary blend, which may be tweaked slightly before bottling, is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. A brilliant effort that is aged in 70% new French oak, it reveals a dense blue/purple color along with an elegant, sweet bouquet of blueberries, acacia flowers, and pain grille. This medium to full-bodied, concentrated, expansive Cabernet is more forward than most Spottswoode examples. I’m sure more tannin will make an appearance as the wine evolves in cask. It is a top-notch success.

Shows off a mix of dense, concentrated flavors, with touches of herb, bell pepper, currant and cherry. Finishes with a solid wall of tannins. Score range: 92-94 (JL)

About 2002 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon

About the Winery Spottswoode
Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Today, two of Mary’s daughters, Beth and Lindy, work for the family winery that each year releases three very special wines: the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, and the recently-introduced Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon. The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed.
