2003 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve

Cabernet Sauvignon: 375ml

$54.99

about this wine:

The Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the utmost expression of each vintage and the terroir of the Napa Valley. The collaboration between winemaking and viticulture has been at the core of the Private Reserve program since the first vintage crafted by Ed Sbragia in 1977. Today, Winemaker Laurie Hook draws on her rich experience of working alongside Ed for over two decades as she blends only the best lots from these outstanding vineyards. Each vineyard is aged separately in new French oak for two years before blending, resulting in a wine of great elegance and structure.

Cory Gowan, JJ Buckley, June 2012

Shiny, opaque red. Soft and pure nose with aromas of cedar, fall leaves, crème de cassis, ripe red plum, and French vanilla. Though still taut on the mid-palate, this is really invigorating, serious, and persistent. Coats the palate with complex flavors of rich and luxurious blue fruit, minerals, sweet tannin, and fine-grained oak, leading to a long airy finish. This is just beginning to hit its stride, but I have no doubt it will cellar well and drink beautifully for the next 20 years. A top shelf Napa cab that is aging gracefully.

...this is a strong effort in a vintage that was not expected to perform as well as it did. The 2003 appears to have more potential longevity than the 2002. An elegant Cabernet, it reveals abundant notes of chocolate, black cherries, black currants and earth in its dense, medium to full-bodied personality. With beautiful purity, sweet tannin and a nicely delineated, structured mouthfeel, it is still a young, but accessible wine that will not reach full maturity for another 5-6 years. It should keep for at least two decades.

Bright medium ruby. Sexy, complex nose melds currant, black raspberry, dark chocolate, minerals, flowers and incense-like spices. Lush, sweet and tactile, with noteworthy depth and inner-mouth aromatic character to its black fruit, mineral and floral flavors. Ripe acids give this a juicy quality and extend the flavors. The fine tannins dust the tongue and teeth.

Wine Spectator, November 2007

Intense, with a spicy, chalky edge to the dried currant and sage notes. Trim and well-balanced, this is typical of the vintage in its austerity. Drink now through 2012
