2003 Luciano Sandrone Barolo le Vigne Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo: 750ml
$99.99
about this wine:
Barolo Le Vigne is often a dark and impenetrable wine in its youth, where the tannins and structure from the Monforte vineyard sites make the wine less approachable. With proper cellaring, this wine reveals more classic Barolo aspects of black cherries, tar, violets and roses. This wine can outlive the Cannubi Boschis bottling in great years: Le Vigne shows more tannins than its brother and possesses amazing freshness and length.

The 2003 Barolo Le Vigne may have a slight edge over the Cannubi Boschis in this vintage, as the ability to blend fruit from various microclimates was a big advantage. It is a full-bodied, soft-textured Barolo with lively color and plenty of ripe red fruit, menthol and spices. This is an especially fresh, vibrant wine for the vintage, with tannins that are particularly refined. A recent vertical of Le Vigne back to 1995 found the 1995, 1997 and 1998 drinking well and the 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001 approachable, but still with additional upside potential. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. --- Antonio Galloni

Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black cherry, dark plum, cinnamon, truffle and tar show surprising freshness for the extremely hot vintage. Creamy, sweet and dense, with layers of ripe red and black fruit, earthy brown spice and underbrush flavors. Balanced and long on the finish, with the otherwise smooth tannins turning just a touch dry at the back. Considering the furnace-like conditions of the 2003 vintage, this wine has an amazing amount of acidity to provide lift and precision, and I prefer the Le Vigne to the Cannubi Boschis this year. Sandrone believes that the surprising acidity level is due to the higher altitude of the vines used to make Le Vigne. Nevertheless, he still had to harvest nine or ten days earlier than usual even in those parcels, starting in Ceretta on September 15 and finishing in Vignane by September 29.

Displays bright berry and truffle on the nose. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a caressing finish. There's just a hint of new wood. Balanced and beautiful. Best after 2009. -JS
