Reviews of 2003 Carlisle Winery Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard

93 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
January 2005
Produced from a vineyard planted in 1927, the dark plum/ruby-hued 2003 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (86% Zinfandel and 14% Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet, Carignan, and who knows what else) displays tremendous power allied with surprising elegance and finesse - a nearly impossible combination for old vine Zinfandel made in a pedal-to-the-metal style. Nevertheless, the use of French oak, massaging of this rustic varietal into something with finesse and elegance (the secret is probably the old vines), and bottling without filtration, has resulted in a wine with gorgeous blackberry, raspberry, peppery notes, refreshing, vibrant acidity, huge depth, and a multilayered palate. This superb Zinfandel should last for 5-7 years. A “good feeling” story is that of Mike Officer, a home winemaker who began his own winery, Carlisle, in 1998, while he was still working as a software developer. The huge success he enjoyed among his mailing list customers, who quickly recognized his dedication to serious winemaking from old vineyard sites, allowed him to abandon his software career to become a full-time owner and winemaker. These are all big, but incredibly well-balanced, fresh wines. Officer is not afraid to push ripeness to the edge, but, remarkably, the wines are never over the top, revealing tremendous textures, aromatics, and ripeness. He has become one of the top three or four Zinfandel producers in northern California, and also demonstrates a sure hand with Syrah and some of the old field blends planted by Italian immigrants over a century ago. About 2003 Carlisle Winery Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard

About the Winery Carlisle Winery
The owner and winemaker of Carlisle Winery and Vineyards tasted his first late-harvest Riesling at age 19 that he claims was so good that it changed the course of his life.  He read everything he could find on the subject of wine, became an avid collector, and actually began to teach his own courses on wine appreciation. He had originally decided to pursue a career in software development, but after 5 years he was restless and started to pursue his true passion: wine and winemaking. He launched the Carlisle label in 1998 and his production reached 1000 cases in 2000.  Jay Maddox, a good friend with a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, joined his team and brought a wealth of knowledge and ability that helped Carlisle grow to 4000 cases annual production.  Officer and Maddox have turned Carlisle into a critically-acclaimed label and have received numerous ratings and awards.
