Reviews of 2003 Clos Fourtet Bordeaux Blend

94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
April 2006
This estate has come back strongly under new ownership, and the quality of the wines now exhibits the tremendous potential of this extraordinary terroir on the limestone plateau just outside the walls of St.-Emilion. Sampled three times from bottle, the 2003 Clos Fourtet is the finest wine I have ever tasted from this estate. Made in a full-bodied, extravagantly rich style, it is just beginning to close down, but it is easy to see the layers of concentrated black cherry, plum, and licorice-infused fruit. There is also a subtle hint of charcoal as well as loads of mineral, flower, blackberry, and creme de cassis characteristics. This full-flavored, opulent, glycerin-filled 2003 offers impressive richness, silky tannin, and a long, 45+ second finish. It will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink well for two decades or more.

This continues to be the most compelling wine I have ever tasted from Clos Fourtet. A sumptuously rich, heady, full-bodied effort, it exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color, a gorgeous texture, tremendous opulence, power, and concentration, and loads of black raspberry, currant, and licorice-infused notes with hints of espresso and white chocolate. It is a ripe, low acid, layered, multidimensional effort that should be at its finest between 2008-2022.

Irrefutably the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Clos Fourtet, this dense purple-colored 2003 is full-bodied, deep, and chewy with abundant amounts of black currant fruit interwoven with subtle wood, espresso roast, and hints of chocolate as well as roasted meat juices. Long, opulent, and full-bodied, with high glycerin, concentration, and superbly integrated tannin, this beauty is a tour de force in winemaking for Clos Fourtet. It was tasted three separate times with virtually identical notes. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+.

Superclean with blackberry, violets, dark chocolate and hints of oak. Full-bodied, with layers of ripe tannins and a long, long finish. Gorgeous. Tight and structured.

About 2003 Clos Fourtet Bordeaux Blend

About the Winery Clos Fourtet
"Chateau Clos Fourtet is a St. Emilion 1er Grand Cru Class property located just outside the entrance to the town. It is distinguished by its beautiful ivy-covered manor house and some of the most extensive underground cellars in the region. Clos Fourtet has had several owners over the years and underwent a mini-renaissance under the stewardship of the Lurtons in the latter half of the last century. Pierre Lurton was the winemaker who really established the property`s reputation as one of the finest on the St. Martin plateau. He left to become winemaker at Cheval Blanc and was replaced by Daniel Alard. In January 2001, Clos Fourtet was bought by Paris businessman Phillipe Cuvelier." www.closfourtet.com

About the Wine
"Clos Fourtet has 19 hectares of vineyards planted with Merlot (72%), Cabernet Franc (22%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (6%). The wine is vinified traditionally and is aged in oak barriques (60-70% new) for 18 months. It is bottled unfiltered...the last vintage at Clos Fourtet under the ownership of the Lurtons... "
