Reviews of 2003 Kistler Chardonnay Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
90-93 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate February 2005 Liqueur of minerals in addition to lemon oil and egg custard might well be a worthy descriptor for the 2003 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard. Light gold with a greenish hue, this wine is a bit more evolved in color than the McCrea Vineyard, but generous, full-bodied, and rich, with uplifting, vibrant acidity, giving freshness and zest to all the component parts. This is a candidate for 4-5 years of aging, although I suspect it is going to last longer.
92 points, Stephen Tanzer May 2006 Medium yellow. Warm gingery spices and nutty oak add interest to the pineapple aroma. Lush, sweet and spicy, if a bit youthfully subdued, with very ripe notes of peach and nectarine. This comes across as less obviously ripe than the McCrea or Dutton Ranch bottlings-or is it simply more understated? There's lovely acidity and very good persistence. The crop level here was half of normal due to a poor set.
About 2003 Kistler Chardonnay Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
About the Winery Kistler
Kistler Vineyards is a small family-owned winery based in the Russian
River Valley. They specialize in the production of Burgundian-style
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It was founded in 1978 by the Kistler
family. The first vintage in 1979 produced around 3000 cases and the
winery has slowly been growing towards its goal level of production,
25,000 cases per annum. The source their grapes from some of the
finest Napa and Sonoma County vineyards and they produce their own
estate-grown and produced wines as well.
About the Wine
"Old style Burgundian aromas combining light sulfides, hazelnuts and minerals. Compellingly intense and precise on the palate, with its complexity derived from flavors of grilled nuts and stones rather than primary fruit...The Chardonnays from this vintage are well structured, sharply delineated wines which at the same time manage to exhibit a large measure of subtlety and nuance. They are classic wines with a solid core of ripe fruit at their center without being fruit-driven or dominated by transitory floral or high-toned fruit esters, as are so many chardonnays today..."
