2003 Lascombes Bordeaux Blend
Reviews of 2003 Lascombes Bordeaux Blend
92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate April 2006 In less than five years this property has emerged as one of the appellation’s up and coming stars thanks to the infusion of money from the American conglomerate, Colony Capital, as well as the braintrust that now oversees the winemaking, Yves Vatelot (of Reignac fame) and the internationally renowned oenologist, Michel Rolland. The dark plum/ruby-hued, open-knit 2003 offers a big, sweet nose of barbecue smoke, plum liqueur, creme de cassis, flowers, new saddle leather, and damp earth. Loads of black fruits, a full-bodied palate impression, low acidity, and a savory, expansive mouthfeel suggest it can be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for 15+.
91 points, Stephen Tanzer May 2006 Excellent deep red. Very sexy, expressive aromas of plum and milk chocolate. Sweet, lush and ripe, with considerable power and thrust for the vintage. Very 2003 in its slightly roasted character but this boasts very good concentration and finishes with sweet, broad tannins and excellent length. Fleshy and evolved enough to give pleasure now, but should hold up well for the next 10 to 15 years. A Margaux standout in 2003.
91 points, Wine Spectator March 2006 Aromas of blackberry and chocolate follow through to a full-bodied palate, with big velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Best after 2010. 17,500 cases made.

Jon B. May 2008 Popped and double decanted. Dark, dark purple color. Nose was fairly closed, initially. Lots of dusty, loamy soil and lead pencil. Then it turned into black cherry, cassis, coffee bean and cocoa. Wonderful mouthfeel. Balanced, medium bodied, low acidity, round tannins and a black cherry finish. |

Jordan J. April 2008 Second time with this wine since release. The nose started out tight yet possesed very appealing sents of white flowers, leather and hot asphalt. In the mouth the wine was light, sour and tannic with a short bitter finish. After two hours the fruit fleshed out and became more plush to what I connect with the 2003 vintage. While the wine improved with time the finish did not.- Tasted in bottle right after-release- no formal note but I recall the fruit being more acessable with a longer more detailed aftertaste ( I gave it an easy 92).

Varieties are vinified separately. The Merlots undergo malolactic fermentation in new French oak casks. Once the assemblage has been performed , the wine is aged in oak casks for 18 months. About 1/2 of the barrels for Chateau Lascomes first wines are new each year. For the second wine, about 1/4 of the barrels are new each year.
