The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is a dense, full-bodied offering that bursts from the glass with waves of intense, ripe dark fruit. This shows outstanding concentration and length on the palate along with elegant, finessed tannins and superb overall balance considering the vintage. As is the case with so many wines, the scorching 2003 has robbed this wine of much of the complexity it offers in more normal years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

($192) Saturated deep red with ruby highlights. Superripe aromas of burnished wood, black cherry, wild berries and mushroom. Sweet, silky and concentrated, with a mineral firmness to its sweet berry, dark cherry and licorice flavors. Very firmly structured, youthfully imploded wine that finishes with serious tannins.
