Proprietor Dominique Decoster (of Havilland porcelain fame) has fashioned an outstanding 2004 (a 5,800-case blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon). Made with the assistance of notable winemaking consultants Jean-Philippe Fort, from Michel Rollandā_Ts laboratory, and St.-Emilionā_Ts bad boy, Jean-Luc Thunevin, it is a powerful (14.5% natural alcohol) sleeper of the vintage. A dark ruby/purple hue is followed by aromas of crushed red and black fruits interwoven with notes of flowers, cedar, new oak, and licorice. Possessing supple tannin, an opulent, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and beautiful purity, texture, and length, it can be drunk now and over the next 15 years. An estate on a roll!

There will be 6,000 cases of the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Fleur-Cardinale. It offers sweet, pure, sexy aromas of blackberries, coffee, smoke, and licorice, additional black currant and cherry flavors, medium body, ripe but firm tannin, and excellent structure, purity, and equilibrium. The 2004 appears to be equal to the 2003, although less evolved and precocious. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.

Good red-ruby. Expressive nose offers berry liqueur, graphite, truffle and minerals. Sweet, concentrated and fine-grained, with currant and truffle flavors complicated by minerals and dark chocolate on the back. Finishes with sweet tannins and lovely persistence. This is accessible already but should age gracefully.

Owner/winemaker Dominique Decosters explains how terroir and winemaking techniques make Fleur Cardinale such an exceptional wine.
A bright ruby red core and rim. Cool blue fruit aromas up front are supported by light flinty earth with rose petal floral notes. The wine is very rich on the front palate with notes of clay over lush blackberry and some nice tart hints of cranberry. Good tannic support on the mid-palate leads to a balanced chewy finish with full fruit and dry chalky hints.
