Mike Supple, JJ Buckley, February 2007

A dark and opulent purple/black core with bright notes of violet and fuchsia flaring up at the rim. Intense, full and dark on the nose with dominating cherry and cassis aromas. The amazing burst of fruit is balanced by cooler earthy notes with hints of flinty minerality, graphite and charcoal leading to intriguing wild honeycomb highlighted by notes of fresh anise. The wine is sweet as it enters the palate, bringing lush notes of milk chocolate, raspberries and cranberries. The acidity is fierce and engaging, allowing the refined young tannins to fill the mouth but stay in balance and never overpower the palate. On the back of the palate, the charcoal and graphite notes come in with a touch of nickel. The finish lingers long with spicy cherries, blackberries, roasted coffee, bakers chocolate, and slight hints of sage and charred oak. Despite its young age, this wine is incredibly balanced and approachable. While round and well integrated, the tannins provide a solid backbone assuring great aging potential.

One of the great successes of the vintage and certainly better than their 2003 is Beaucastel's 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape. Deep ruby/purple in color with loads of licorice, smoked game, black cherry and blackberry fruit, along with incense and truffle, the wine has fabulous richness, high tannin, medium to full body, and beautiful length, richness, and purity. This is a beauty and one of the vintage's finest wines. Give it 4-6 years of bottle age and drink it over the next 25+ years. It has the potential to be one of the longest-lived Chateauneuf du Papes of the vintage.

Powerful red and dark berry aromas verge on liqueur-like but are enlivened by zesty mineral and anise accents. Lush, supple and sweet, with deep raspberry and cherry flavors, fine-grained tannins and complicating herb and smoked meat tones. Very smooth on the finish, which is sappy, deep in cherry flavor and impressively long.

Thoroughly primal, with a torrent of raspberry and boysenberry fruit rushing forth, this only shows hints of its full range, with licorice, incense, graphite and mocha flavors fluttering in the background. It's also got ironclad structure, and a long finish that shows great cut and grip. Shows none of the severe tannins of the 2003. Best from 2009 through 2025. 14,165 cases made. -J.M.

About Winery

Among the prominent people in the town of Courthezon during the sixteenth century was the Beaucastel family. In 1549, "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its land holdings, containing 25 saumées at Coudoulet". More than four centuries later, this remarkable domaine, known today at Château de Beaucastel, is producing what most people acknowledge to be the finest wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

"Beaucastel and its subsidiary wines marketed under the Perrin et Fils moniker are consistently among the bright shining stars of France. I have been visiting this estate for nearly thirty years, and over that time I have seen all the elements of what makes wines great - an incredible respect for the vineyards, a conscientious, uncompromising work ethic, and extraordinary passion for gentle handling of fruit from their sites." -Robert Parker
