This is one of the most exciting projects of winemaking consultant Mark Herold. Unfortunately, only 325 cases of the 2003 were produced, and there will probably be even less of the 2004. A strong offering, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts an inky/blue/purple color in addition to stunning aromas of chocolate-infused black currants, blackberries, espresso roast, licorice, and scorched earth. Dense and full-bodied, it is one of those rare 2004s with tremendous density and richness as opposed to being front end-loaded and superficially charming. A wine of exceptional richness, power, and intensity, if it behaves like the 2002 and 2003, it will be even better after bottling, and should last for 15 years or more. (Not yet released) Tel.  The dense purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon’s hefty 15.1% alcohol is well-disguised by classic aromas of white chocolate, black currants, blackberries, licorice, and coffee beans. This dense, medium to full-bodied, opulent, fleshy, powerful effort boasts sweet tannin and low acidity. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Previously recommended: 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (95). Tel. Bright medium ruby. Cassis and coffee torrefaction on the nose; a bit more medicinal and brooding than the 2003. Fat, sweet and primary but with good lift for the vintage. The medicinal character carries through onto the finish, which features firm tannins and noteworthy structure. Not noticeably better than the very good 2003 but this will almost certainly require a bit of bottle aging.

Smooth, plush and concentrated. A multidimensional expression of Cabernet, with layers of currant, blackberry, plum and spice. Supple-textured, this keeps a focus on the fruit and is supported by firm, ripe tannins. Yet fruit glides through on the finish. Best from 2008 through 2014. 737 cases made. –JL

(30 minute decant) showed wonderfully. Coming right after the Maybach, it had some great balance, structure and roundness being just a teeny bit short on the finish (initally). Sitting in the glass for 15 minutes opened this up and lengthened the finish out nicely. Pure blackberries, a hint of creme de cassis, and some lead pencil shavings. Great dense and lush mouthfeel while not being a head banger. Glad I have more and although I can't give last nights bottle another 99, I consider it still up there in my wine-o-memory bank as one that satisfies.
