Reviews of 2004 Copain Wines Syrah Broken Leg Vineyard
94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate December 2005 The impressive line-up of 2004 Syrahs includes the 2004 Syrah Broken Leg Vineyard. An exotic, nearly over-the-top perfume of acacia flowers, blueberries, and blackberries is followed by a wine boasting huge body, terrific structure, and vibrant underlying acidity. With abundant ripeness, purity, and texture, it should age gracefully for a decade or more.
It’s hard not to enjoy a visit with Wells Guthrie given his enthusiasm and passion for accessing top-notch vineyards and producing high quality wines. His impressive resume includes positions with Michel Chapoutier and Gerard Chave as well as a short stint as a journalist for The Wine Spectator. Guthrie is one of the Rhone Ranger mavericks who utilizes considerable stems in his winemaking as well as a variety of barrels, ranging from small casks to the large, 600-liter demi-muids. Such Old World winemaking techniques as minimal intervention, natural yeast fermentations, and no fining or filtration has resulted in thrilling wines of undeniable character and personality.
About 2004 Copain Wines Syrah Broken Leg Vineyard
About the Winery Copain Wines
Wells Guthrie began at Wine Spectator's San Francisco office as a
tasting coordinator, where he discovered his love for Syrah. This love
prompted him to move to the Northern Rhone where he worked for
Chapoutier for two vintages in the winery and in the fields. He also
spent a good deal of time with Jean Louis Chave, who had an enormous
impact on Guthrie's experiences in the Rhone. When Guthrie returned, he
went to work with Turley Wine Cellars and soon thereafter began his own
project, Copain Wine Cellars. Guthrie is dedicated to producing
top-quality vineyard designated wines that involve the "Old World"
philosophy of limited or minimal intervention and the use primarily of
the land and its resources. This approach assists them in producing
wines that allow for unique expression of each vineyard's qualities and
characteristics.
