Reviews of 2004 Kalleske Shiraz Old Vine Johann Georg Syrah
96 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate October 2006 Kalleskes top wine is the 150-case cuvee of Shiraz Johann Georg Old Vine from a 129-year-old vineyard. Named after the first Kalleske, a native of Silesia who immigrated to Australia in 1838, it offers just about everything one could want in a Barossa Valley Shiraz. Aged two years in new French and American 300 liter hogsheads, and produced from yields of one ton of fruit per acre, this cuvee is extraordinarily consistent in 2004 and 2005. In fact, its hard to choose a favorite. This wine exhibits great intensity, an inky/purple color, and notes of creosote, camphor, blackberries, cassis, and subtle vanillin/pain grille notes. Unbelievably unctuous and full-bodied, with stunning concentration, thrilling purity, and amazing length as well as richness, it should evolve gracefully for 15+ years.
About 2004 Kalleske Shiraz Old Vine Johann Georg Syrah
About the Winery Kalleske
In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since the 1800s near the village of Greenock. They are one of the regions leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After five generations of growing grapes, winemaker and sixth generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and created the Kalleske label. The winery is situated on the family estate where open top fermenters, basket press and barrel store ensure the vineyard realizes its full potential as wine. The vineyard is managed by Troy's father, fifth generation grape-grower, John Kalleske, who has over forty years experience tending the vineyard. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot and Durif. Vines vary in age with the oldest vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with all grapes grown organically and the winery is certified organic. There are seven wines in the Kalleske range. Lorraine Late Harvest Semillon is a luscious dessert wine. Clarry’s Barossa White is a blend of Semillon and Chenin Blanc and its red partner, Clarry’s Grenache & Shiraz is a blend of vineyards dating back to the 1940s. The Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine, made from a superb Shiraz block on the Western edge of the Greenock Creek. The Old Vine Grenache is from a small dry-grown vineyard planted as bush vines on the Kalleske farm in 1935 and the Johann Georg Shiraz is made from a dry-grown vineyard planted on the farm in 1875. The range is completed with a sublime liqueur wine, JMK Shiraz VP. All wines are estate grown and vinified with minimalistic winemaking techniques used to fully capture the essence of the vineyard allowing genuine hand made estate wines to be produced.
