Reviews of 2004 Matrot, Domaine Thierry Blagny la Piece Sous le Bois Premier Cru Pinot Noir
91 points, Burghound April 2006 An exceptionally pretty nose with real freshness, verve and elegance merges into rich, sweet and intense flavors underpinned by obvious minerality and a textured, dusty and detailed finish that explodes on the backend. There is a lovely hint of violets here that suffuses everything from start to finish and while there is the same sense of sweetness here as in the Santenots, there is a bit more restraint. While this too will be approachable young, the balance is such that this will be capable of aging for up to a decade, perhaps longer.

About the Winery Matrot, Domaine Thierry
Producer note: Thierry Matrot said that 2006 is a "vintage where I harvested very
late. I waited an extra week to start because the reds weren't ripe and
while I lost 25% of the juice due to heat, I gained 25% in concentration.
Everything, even the Bourgogne, came in above 14%. And because the
concentration also concentrated the acidity, my '06s remind me of my '03s
in this regard as my yields were only around 20 hl/ha. There was however
a lot of sorting that was required as some grapes had fallen over into
surmaturité and had to be eliminated for fear of imparting off
odors and flavors. Overall, 2005 and 2006 remind me a great deal of 1989
and 1990." The wines were bottled in September and while Matrot was
very enthusiastic about them, I found them to be somewhat mixed as they
are definitely exotic and sometimes slightly warm on the backend.
Moreover, while these '06s are certainly very good, Matrot is known for
crafting high energy, pure and minimalist whites and it would be fair to
say that these '06s depart somewhat from that style. (Diageo Château and
