Reviews of 2004 Weinbach, Domaine Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg Selection de Grains Nobles Riesling
96 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate February 2008 The 2004 Riesling Schlossberg Selection de Grains Nobles is rather 1996-like in both its striking aroma of white truffle, quince, apricot, strawberry, and candied citrus rind, and an almost surgically sharp and focused acidity that promotes juicy fresh citrus and apricot intensity and a rapier finish. The overall effect is of dried apricot, strawberry, and quince with orange peel, all macerated in honey, grapefruit, and lemon juice. Yet there is a subtle creaminess to the texture and a vanilla and apricot cream aspect to the flavors as well, a wine possessed of a fundamental, paradoxical yet somehow not inharmonious dichotomy as well as a kaleidoscopic light show of a finish that keeps wafting over the palate. I am sure this will last a quarter century, though whether it will display periods of disharmony I would not attempt to speculate. The dynamic trio of Fallers continues to bottle some of France’s (hardly just Alsace’s) richest and most flamboyant wines. Beginning with 2005, all of their vineyards are being biodynamically farmed. Laurence Faller finds their 2005s in general “more focused and clear” (this was especially true of Riesling) despite their often prominent botrytis component, and the 2004s richer. I suppose it goes without saying, but one has to carefully scrutinize each Weinbach label, so numerous are the cuvees. And as wonderful as is the distinctiveness exhibited by the vast majority of wines here, even a geek like yours truly could be forgiven for asking whether somewhat fewer different bottlings might benefit consumers as well as journalists!
96 points, Stephen Tanzer November 2006 Racy, spicy, rot-ennobled aromas of fresh pineapple, crystallized citrus peel, orange marmalade and honey. Glyceral-thick and silky on entry, then the bracing acids take over the palate, giving extraordinary intensity and penetration to this exhilarating wine. A great expression of pure botrytis, with a mounting, palate-staining finish that goes on for minutes. This will make for great drinking over the next 20 years. This one hit my G-spot.
95 points, Wine Spectator July 2007 The light-weight framework and silky texture carries intense tropical fruit flavors of pineapple and guava, with apple pie, orange peel and a touch of hazelnut. The tangy acidity comes across on the tangerine-laced finish. Drink now through 2030. 11 cases imported. –BS
