Mike Supple, JJ Buckley, March 2008

Opens with an explosion of rich cassis, blackberry and blueberry followed by a hint of dusty slate, spicy cedar and toasty vanilla. Lush on entry, with flavors building rapidly on a densely packed mid-palate. Ample ripe tannins give the wine a lot of structure and body through the finish. Dark black cherry and cassis are matched with black truffle, wet earth and lingering roast coffee on the finish. Excellent

93 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2008

Given traditional Burgundian-like treatments of malolactic in barrel and aging on its lees, the 2005 Balthus is an opaque purple-hued blockbuster offering up a sweet perfume of blueberry liqueur interwoven with notes of incense, camphor, spring flowers, and crushed rocks. Dense and full-bodied with stunning concentration, in a blind tasting it could easily beat out many classified growths. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

91 points,

Wine Spectator, March 2008

A dense, full-bodied red, with lots of smoky oak coloring the black currant and notes of passion fruit, kumquat and violet. Long and flavorful, with a backbone of velvety tannins. A little brutish just now, but it's all there. Best after 2011. 500 cases made. -JS

About Winery

In 2002 Chateau de Reignac purchased a neighboring estate which is where Balthus is produced from a special, three-hectare, portion of the vineyard that was planted some 35 years ago excusively with Merlot.  This high-quality terroir consists of clay and limestone. Balthus is barrel-fermented using a system developed and patented by Yves Vatelot. In view of the spectacular quality obtained using this process, it was implemented for the wine of Reignac beginning with the 2003 vintage.
