Mike Supple, JJ Buckley, February 2008

Inky dark ruby core with a bright ruby rim. Rich blueberry fruit aromas are countered by nice slatey minerality, smoky lardon, and a hint of vanilla cream. The front of the palate is dominated by blueberries and boysenberries. The mouthfeel is impressively round and balanced, and much more restrained than your average overblown Barossa Shiraz. Soft and supple, this beauty is ready to bring home and pop the cork tonight.

96 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2007

The 2005 Shiraz "Heysen" is a blend of three vineyards. It was aged in 40% new French oak, 20% new American oak, and the balance neutral French. The nose reveals wood smoke, toast, game, bacon, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to an opulent, complex, and intensely flavored wine which merits 6-8 years in the cellar. This lengthy wine will drink well through 2025.

92 points,

Wine Spectator, August 2007

Smooth and refined, with a minty edge to the ripe blackberry and cherry flavors. Finishes with a layer of spice and toast that lingers beautifully. Has depth and distinction. Drink now through 2017. 250 cases imported. –HS

About Winery

Mother-Franzicha and father-Rolf Heinrich arrived in Australia from Europe (Austria and Hungary) in 1950 part of the large influx of post war immigration to Australia. They worked with the Victorian railways for three years. During that time they met Elmore Schulz a train driver and a grape grower in the Barossa Valley. In 1953 they picked grapes in the Barossa, met Chris Vohrer and Wilhem Abel and in 1954 worked a vintage in their winery. They purchased this business in 1955.

Until 2004 wines carried the family brand of Veritas. As interest in the wines grew in the United States this term caused confusion with another Veritas wine brand. Now all the wines are branded Rolf Binder.
