about this wine:

Montalivet is a walled vineyard to the east that surrounds the domaine and features the Sabons' oldest vines. Since 1990, these grapes have formed the basis for the deluxe "Cuvee Papet" - an amazingly concentrated and complex Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Lots of potential here and this 2005 Clos du Mont Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet could end up being as good as their blockbuster 1998. The nose shows rich dark cherry and cassis fruit, charred earth, meat and licorice notes and there's nice complexity, typicity and depth. The palate is really concentrated, structured and rich with medium to full body, lots of structure and plenty of length with ripe, fine grained tannins. While this has enough fruit to buffer to structure and make this enjoyable now, give it 5 years and I'm banking on this being a rock star bottle.

The dark ruby 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Papet exhibits a big, sweet nose of roasted meats, licorice, Provencal herbs, black cherry, raspberry, and currant. The wine is medium to full-bodied, deep, moderately tannic, but very elegant and fresh. It should drink well for close to two decades.

($68-$105; 95% grenache and 5% mourvedre) Inky ruby. Stunningly fragrant bouquet of fresh red berries, cherry, minerals, Asian spices and fresh flowers; with its combination of power and purity, this smells like a Musigny. Deeply concentrated raspberry and cherry flavors are complicated by anise, cinnamon and floral pastille, with big but interwoven tannins adding grip. Finishes with outstanding silky persistence and a strong red berry character.

Has lots of grip, with a very stony undertow carrying notes of wet pebble, sweet earth, licorice, coffee and fig. Pretty lavender and spice box hints flitter in the background as well. Dark and chewy on the finish for now, this needs time to settle into itself. Best from 2009 through 2030. 1,000 cases made

About Winery

The Clos du Mont Olivet is one of the very best Chateauneuf du Papes. They produce a splendidly rich, old-style Chateauneuf-du-Pape from ancient vines (in average age of 60 years) grown on 62 acres of vineyards.

The "clos" of Mont-Olivet is a specific vineyard of nearly 20 acres, all on the plateau of Domaine La Solitude. From this parcel of old vines, the Sabons produce their famed Cuvee du Papet (named after the grandfather Seraphin).

... It is an exquisite wine....
