The 2005 Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard, which is a cool Russian River site, tips the scales at only 12.6% alcohol, but it has incredible phenolic maturity because of the long, cool growing season at this site. Notes of bacon fat, violets, blackberry, and cassis as well as licorice and some exotic apricots make an impression in this inky/purple wine of great intensity, fabulous texture, and stunning purity. The exotic influence comes from the 10% Viognier co-fermented with the Syrah. This is a tour de force in winemaking, and should age brilliantly for 10-15 years. Exciting wines seem to emerge annually from Pax Mahle, a self-trained winemaker (and all the better for it), and owner Joe Donelan. The 2005s are just hitting the shelf, and there are some sensational ones for sure. Tel. (707) 591-0782; Fax (707) 591-0784

Inky violet. A powerful bouquet of mineral-accented dark berries, candied cherry and licorice pastille is complicated by pungent tobacco and underbrush notes. Bright and snappy, with sharply etched red and dark fruit flavors, taut minerality and fine-grained tannins. Very Old World in style (the alcohol is a low 12.5%), showing an entrancing interplay of fruit, earth and herb tones. The finish has outstanding snap and length. 93 points
