2005 Penfolds Cabernet-Shiraz Cellar Reserve
Proprietary Blend: 750ml
$74.99
about this wine:
This wine is part of a limited release program of experimental wines usually only available at the winery's cellar door in Adeliade, Australia. This particular wine came from the winery's efforts to release a Bin 60A blend but was judged to be not up to the standards for release under that label. Very rare and limited in availability in the US market.

Spicy, floral and heady aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and cedar/dark chocolate/vanilla oak overlie dusty, earthy and almost muddy undertones. Rich and substantial, its mouthfilling palate of briary blackberry, plum and red berry fruits has a jujube-like quality and a racy, sour-edged aspect. Framed by firm, fine and drying tannins, and backed by some assertive new oak, it's appealing and at present uncomplicated, but right on the style button for the Penfolds customer. Drink 2013-2017.

The most distinctive of blends, considering the sources, is the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (65%)-Shiraz (35%) "Cellar Reserve." The Cabernet component is sourced from Coonawarra and the Shiraz from Barossa. Opaque purple/black in color, the nose is redolent of pain grille, vanilla, Asian spices, violets, black currants, and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied and firm on the palate, the wine has excellent depth, gobs of ripe fruit, and good balance but is an infant developmentally. Give this lengthy blend 8-10 years in the cellar and drink it through 2035. 93+ -Jay Miller
