2005 Valandraud Bordeaux Blend
Reviews of 2005 Valandraud Bordeaux Blend
93-96 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate April 2006 A terrific effort from bad boy and leading garagiste, Jean-Luc Thunevin, and his sidekick, Murielle Andraud, the inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 Valandraud exhibits superb aromas of graphite, black currants, blackberries, violets, white chocolate, sweet licorice, and espresso roast. Boasting great intensity, full-bodied power, beautiful purity, and layers of complexity, this stunning wine should be unusually long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025+.
93-95 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 2007 The 2005 Valandraud should turn out to be one of their greatest efforts. Although closed, it reveals phenomenal texture, a dense purple color, and a gorgeous bouquet of espresso, chocolate, sweet blackberry and currant fruit, and hints of lead pencil shavings and incense. With extraordinary purity, layers of concentration, full-bodied power, and elegance as well as symmetry, this stunning St.-Emilion should be at its peak between 2012-2030.
The irrepressible de facto head of the garagiste movement, Jean-Luc Thunevin, along with his partner, Murielle Andraud, continue to achieve marvelous things at this estate, always pushing the envelope of quality.
93-95 points, Stephen Tanzer June 2006 (70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 2.5% each cabernet sauvignon and malbec) Bright medium ruby. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and minerals. Dense and compellingly sweet, with a seductive thickness of texture but also outstanding penetration of flavor. This opens out impressively on the back end, finishing with superb breadth and substantial late-arriving tannins that coat the teeth. Lively and refined. The 14.5% alcohol in conjunction with a healthy pH of 3.6 suggest that this wine will age gracefully for a good 15 to 20 years. 93-95 points
About 2005 Valandraud Bordeaux Blend
About the Winery Valandraud
"Château de Valandraud was one of the first Garagiste wines with its inaugural vintage being the difficult 1991. Jean-Luc and Murielle Thunevin own a mere 2.7 hectares of vineyards which consist of 4 separate parcels and are planted with 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec.
De Valandraud's yields are pitifully low and the grapes are de-stemmed by hand before being fermented in 2 open-top fermenting vessels. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels and the wine is matured in "200%" new oak barriques for 18 months (two sets of new barrels for 9 months each).
De Valandraud produces only about 400 cases a year and, not surprisingly, this very rich and concentrated St-Emilion is now one of the most sought-after wines in Bordeaux."
About the Wine
"Strawberry and vanilla flavors... Delicious, and very elegant."
