95 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2008

A 2005 Pinot Gris Altenbourg Quintessence de Grains Nobles erupts from the glass with smoke, spice, pineapple, peach and honey. Extraordinarily rich yet luscious and refined, it finishes with astonishing clarity, exhibiting bell-clear essence of peach, pineapple, and orange awash in honey and liberally dusted with brown spices. Amazing now - and by no means superficially sweet - this should gain complexity over a 20-25 year period. -David Schildknecht

97 points,

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, December 2008

Pure botrytis nose dominated by tangy crystallized orange and lemon peel. Wonderfully sweet but cut by sharp citrussy acidity that gives this extremely unevolved wine an almost painful quality today. It's remarkable that the varietal character comes through so clearly at this level of ripeness. The bracing finish mounts inexorably and goes on for minutes. An extraordinary sweet wine, likely to last for two or three decades.

Wine Spectator, November 2008

Elegant, with whiplash acidity that starts your mouth watering as soon as the wine hits your palate. There's lots of candied orange and apple flavors, with notes of guava, honey and a hint of forest floor underneath. Drink now through 2028. 15 cases imported. -AN

About Winery

At the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill in Alsace stands one of the finest estates in all of France. Domaine Weinbach is run with consummate skill and total dedication by Colette Faller and her two daughters, Catherine and Laurence. In the words of Robert Parker, "Colette and her daughter Laurence...pushed Weinbach to the pinnacle of Alsace's qualitative pyramid." Domaine Weinbach was established by the Order of Capuchin monks in 1612. The "Clos des Capuchins" vineyard surrounds the domaine; the prestigious "Schlossberg" vineyard (the first terroir in Alsace to receive the status of Grand Cru), the Grand Cru "Furstentum", and the adjacent "Altenbourg" vineyard rise above the clos. The domaine has 62 acres of vineyards in the heart of Kayserberg's hills and valleys.
