2005 Clarendon Hills Shiraz Piggott Range Vineyard Syrah

Syrah: 750ml

$79.99

about this wine:

Planted in 1965, in 2 inches of rich red loamy top soil. The slab of pure rock that lies beneath limits the vigor of the vines and appears to concentrate all components of the fruit - flavour, colour, tannin. The vineyard produces a intensely complex and long-lived syrah.  It is considered a `Grand Cru'.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2007

The 2005 Syrah Piggott Range is quite backward currently. Glass-coating, it is deep crimson in color with mineral notes, violets, spice box, black pepper, espresso, smoked game, and blueberry aromatics. Deceivingly opulent, it has enough structure to merit 8-10 years of cellaring and should make old bones. Drink it through 2035.

($165) Inky purple. Deeply concentrated, slowly unfolding aromas of blueberry, mulberry and candied plum are complicated by bacon fat and espresso, with sexy oak spices adding interest. Chunky tannins give structural support to the brooding fruit. Picks up a brighter cherry character on the chewy finish, which offers exceptional cling and length.

95 points,

Wine Spectator, October 2007

A lavish mouthful of plum, blackberry, chocolate and subtle sweet spices, hinting at roasted fruit as the finish sails on and on against super refined tannins. Dramatic, but beautifully balanced. Best from 2009 through 2020. 500 cases imported

About Winery

Clarendon Hills, 25 miles south of Adelaide, was established in 1989 by Roman Bratasiuk, the owner/winemaker. Since its establishment just over a decade ago Clarendon Hills has had amazing success. Clarendon Hills has received excellent reviews from both critics and publications alike. From The Wine Advocate to the Wine Companion and Wine Spectator, to being named as one of Robert Parker's 'Wine Producers of the Year' in his newsletter Issue 108 - Clarendon Hills continues to impress. In August 2003, Robert Parker (Wine Advocate) names Clarendon Hills as one of Australia and the world's greatest wineries. The quality of Clarendons success can be attributed to a number of things. Firstly the age of the vines, the town Clarendon was established in 1845. Today many of the vineyards surrounding the winery are over seventy years old the gnarly and twisted bush vines are dry farmed and the grapes are hand picked. Secondly the soil variation and quality, the soil profiles of each winery are very different. This difference, from the rock and shale of Piggott Range to the heavy clay of the Clarendon Grenache Vineyard. Lastly Roman's dedication and philosophy to winemaking. His aim is quite simply to make wines equal to anything in the world.
