2005 Clerc Milon Bordeaux Blend
Reviews of 2005 Clerc Milon Bordeaux Blend
Mike Supple, JJ Buckley January 2008 Showing very impressively for such a young Pauillac. Rich caramel underscored by herbs, red cherry and blackberry on the nose. Soft entry on the palate with a round, full body. Big, ripe tannins with a long sweet fruit and toasted caramel finish.
Mike Supple, JJ Buckley April 2006 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenčre. Bright red color with flecks of purple. Extremely floral nose over tobacco, raspberry and cherry. Very full and round on the plate. Fine tannins that are well integrated. Ripe fruit up front with notes of chocolate and espresso. Delicious.
91-93 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 2007 Administrator Philippe Dalhuin has turned out an atypically structured, tannic, less approachable Clerc-Milon that has put on weight since last year and now rivals its stablemate, d’Armailhac. Powerful notes of forest floor, black currants, cherries, graphite, and pain grille emerge from this fresh yet exceptionally powerful, intense effort. It also possesses surprisingly high alcohol for this vintage (13.5%). The final blend was 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+.
95 points, Wine Spectator March 2008 Offers fabulous aromas of currant, tar, lead pencil and mineral. Full-bodied, with supersoft tannins that caress the palate. Beautiful and impressive. A fabulous wine. The best Clerc in a very long time. Best after 2014. –JS
About 2005 Clerc Milon Bordeaux Blend
About the Winery Clerc Milon
"Chateau Clerc-Milon is located in Pauillac, just between Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...69 acres producing 14,000 cases... 5th Growth..65% Cabernet Sauvignon , 25% Merlot, 10% other varieties... These wines receive the same treatment as their more famous neighbor and Rothschild stablemate, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...This chateau was named a fifth growth in the Medoc Classification of 1855 but always seemed to be an underachiever considering its prime location between two first growths (Mouton and Lafite). It had prime location and soil but never realized the expectations that were placed upon it. The estate is marked by the half-finished chateau which sits on the property.
In 1970, the Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased the property and began a complete renovation of the vineyards and the cellars. New fermentation vats were added to lenghten the maceration time. The chateau started to show what it could become with the fabulous 1982 vintage and really came into it's own in about 1985...The wines of Clerc Milon are firm and well structured due to the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon used to make them. They have hints of raspberry and black currant in the nose and on the palate. These wines are able to easily age for a decade or longer but are suprisingly accessible at much younger ages. They are often approachable when 6 or 7 years old... "
About the Wine
"Chateau Clerc-Milon is an unusual wine. It does not have a huge, vocal following in the way that Lynch-Bages does. It does not have the benefit of recent publicity concerning an obvious improvement in quality ...an impressive wine; in several vintages a dark, brooding and masculine libation, punching way above its weight...
