80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Dark purple gradually turning to bright red/violet rim. Dusty chocolate, limestone, cherry and blackberry on the nose with slight hints of mint. Fairly bold tannic structure supports the fruit on the palate. Very chewy with a fresh acidic finish.

A stunning effort from this property in St.-Christophe des Bardes, this 25-acre vineyard is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Made in a flamboyant style for the vintage, it reveals a dense purple color along with an expressive, ostentatious nose of sweet cherry liqueur intermixed with creme de cassis, toast, spring flowers, incense, melted licorice, and chocolate. Full-bodied with high but sweet, velvety tannins, it is already approachable, but promises to develop more nuances over the next decade. It should last for 20+ years. Kudos to the proprietor and his wine consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt.

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of kirsch and damp earth show an almost porty ripeness. Rich, broad and full but classically dry; offers impressive volume but comes across as a bit massive and chunky. This cold, north-facing terroir can support a hot year like 2005, notes consulting winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt. Still, I would not describe this as an elegant style. Finishes with building tannins.

Château La Bienfaisance, located in the town of Saint-Christophe des Bardes on the outskirts of Saint-Emilion, has a 16-hectare vineyard. The main plots, planted with Merlot and Cabernet-Franc grape varieties, are on the famous clay and limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion and on the clay and sandy slopes of the following hillside. This remarkable variety of soils enables the crafting of wines with complementary qualities of powerfulness, finesse and elegance.

Over the last ten years, cropping techniques driven by the determination to attain the highest possible quality have been implemented in the 30-year old vines: integrated crop management to respect the terroir and the grapes, progressive leaf removal, crop thinning, hand picking at maximum ripeness, double sorting of the grapes before their arrival in the vat-room, everything is done every year to obtain concentrated grapes with an outstanding quality potential.
