A microscopic quantity of 200 cases are produced by Tony Balu, the regisseur of Clos Fourtet, the premier grand cru classe that has made a name for itself over the last few vintages. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005 Pierre de Lune represents decadent St.-Emilion at its finest. This voluptuous, opulent, baroque-styled wine possesses a deep ruby/purple color, an extraordinary nose of black truffles, roasted herbs, incense, chocolate, coffee, blackberries, blueberries, and new saddle leather. It is a complex, modern-styled, enormously endowed, opulent, fleshy offering to enjoy now and over the next two decades.

Don't get too excited as there are only around 200 cases of this wine made by Tony Balu, the regisseur who is one of the people responsible for the renaissance at the famous St.-Emilion estate of Clos Fourtet. Baluâ's own project, Pierre de Lune, is a tiny vineyard planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaking guru Stephane Derenoncourt is the consultant, and the result is a wine of extraordinary opulence, decadence, and extravagant richness. Aromas and flavors of blackberries, cassis, smoke, incense, graphite, truffles, and roasted meats emerge from this full-bodied, dense, concentrated super-star. It should drink well for 15-20 years.

Made by the regisseur at the up-and-coming estate of Clos Fourtet, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon has been brilliant over recent vintages. The dense black/purple-tinged 2005 reveals a stunning bouquet of crushed rocks, white flowers, truffles, blackberries, and asphalt. Stuffed and layered, with fabulous purity, a multidimensional palate feel, fresh acidity, sweet tannin, and a pure finish, it should last for 15 or more years.
