Dark and intense core with a bright pink and fuchsia rim. A little muted on the nose (probably bottle shock) but intense cinnamon and rich dark fruits are swimming below. Round in the mouth with bright sour cherries and raspberries leading to a nice finish with hints of toasty oak.

Potel’s 2005 Volnay Vieilles Vignes – representing an inordinately large lot for him, and assembled from seven different parcels, some premier cru – offers aromas and flavors of lightly cooked cherry and blackcurrant tinged with vanilla, licorice and black chocolate. Quite full and imposingly ripe, it just lacks a bit for sap and juiciness, offering a relatively foursquare finish.

(25% is declassified premier cru) Good deep red-ruby. Pungent aromas of raspberry, violet, stone and chocolate. Fat and sweet, with ripe flavors of black cherry and chocolate. This is a big boy, with noteworthy solidity but also ripe framing acidity. Likely to be the best vintage to date for this label. Potel noted that there are 40,000 bottles of this juice, and that he previously made a separate premier cru bottling of 10,000 bottles.
