The 2005 Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese predictably – given the site and the personality of Kesselstatt’s other wines – opens with notes of very ripe tropical and caramelized orchard fruits, along with high-toned esters and a hint of white raisin suggestive of a brush with botrytis. Luscious pink grapefruit juiciness spreads its way across a silken, glossy-textured palate, helping to keep extreme ripeness, relative low acidity, and sheer opulence of fruit from becoming fatiguing. The finish is like a honey- and oil-slick loaded with fruit flavors and very hard to clean off your palate. While this wine might not be most tasters’ ideas of a Spatlese, no one should complain too loudly about near Beerenauslese character being delivered at a Spatlese price.
