Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2009

A spectacular effort (whatâ_Ts new?), this brilliant offering from proprietor Hubert de Bouard is another classic. A blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of creosote, blueberry pie, espresso roast, blackberries, and graphite. Extremely full-bodied and stunningly rich with a multi-layered texture, sweet tannin, and a 45-second finish, this exceptional 2006 is one of the great wines of St.-Emilion. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028.

($250) Full ruby. Vibrant aromas of crushed blueberry and bitter chocolate are further brightened by a violet quality. Dense, sweet and lush, with terrific depth and freshness to its dark fruit, mineral and violet flavors. This is really creamy-rich for the vintage. Finishes with smooth, chocolatey tannins and outstanding palate-saturating length. It's hard to imagine how Hubert de Bouard managed to get such a deep, layered middle palate without any sign of overextracted tannins or heaviness, but he has managed this neat trick.

Initially the wine is all firm tannins, but then there is a pure line of fresh black fruits that comes through, with cranberry tannins and blackberry jamminess. Above it all, is succulent richness and clear acidity. A beautifully shaped wine. R.V.

This has a gorgeous nose of black licorice, black cherry and sage. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a very long finish. There's beautiful texture for the vintage. Enjoy the fruit and richness. Best from 2013 through 2017. â_"JS

About Winery

A scant kilometre from the famous bell-tower at Saint Emilion, on its renowned south facing "pied de cote" (foot of the hill) site, Chateau Angelus is the story of a passionate involvement of the last four generations of the Benard de Laforest family.

The estate's name derives from a particularly ancient plot of vineyard, from which the men tending the vines were able to hear the angelus ringing out from all three of the village churches, chapelle de Mazerat the church of Saint Martin de Mazerat and the church of Saint Emilion.

An intense dark core is encircled by a vibrant ruby rim flecked with pink. Sweet cocoa and caramel aromas swim over the fruit. Rich raspberry notes are followed by some lighter herbal qualities of tea and fresh mint. Soft and smooth on the palate entry, the 2006 Angelus has a very silky mouth feel. The fruit and tannins build on the mid-palate through to the finish, keeping the wine incredibly balanced with nice complexity and depth of flavor. Soft dark blueberry and caramel linger on the finish. This is a great wine.
