about this wine:
Coronato is produced from grapes grown in Marchese Lodovico Antinori's Tenuta dei Pianali estate vineyard in Bolgheri. Nearby "Poggio di Coronato," or "Crown Mountain," inspired the name of Pianali's singular wine. The 2005 vintage was the first release of this wine, available exclusively in the United States.
The Pianali estate vineyard is located on an elevated plain, which is effected by the marine influences of the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The land is well exposed and ventilated with well-draining soil composed primarily of sandy clay. The vines were planted in 2000 and 2001, using high density spacing of 7,500 vines per hectare (3,035 vines per acre). They are trained using a unilateral cordon and spur pruning. Cover crops are planted to reduce vine vigor and control yields when necessary.

A medium ruby red hue. Generous cassis, dark cherry and a backdrop of vanilla on the nose lead into similar fruit on the palate. Cocoa powder and chocolate emerge as well, creating a nice counterpoint to the cherry fruit, and secondary notes of olive and cola nut add another layer of complexity. Spicy oak picks up on the back end, leading into a medium full finish. Thanks to the generous fruit and judicious oak, this versatile cabernet sauvignon dominated blend drinks quite well now with an hour of aeration and will age nicely for another 5 or so years in the cellar.

The 2006 Coronato, from the Pianali estate in Bolgheri, is a boisterous, full-bodied red that explodes from the glass with masses of ripe, dark fruit. The wine possesses terrific richness and density in a full-bodied, opulent style that stands apart from the other wines in this line-up. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. -Antonio Galloni

This is a generous Bordeaux blend from Coastal Tuscany with luscious notes of chocolate, spice, sweet cherry, leather and pipe tobacco. There's a note of ripe fruit as well and the mouthfeel is driven by a powerful blast of exotic spice, clove and cardamom. Pair it with succulent sirloin. M.L.

Offers beautiful blackberry and currant, with hints of toasty oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Polished and silky-textured. A very pretty young wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best after 2011. 1,300 cases made. -JS
